In the near future, the Earth’s forests, fields, and oceans have been depleted of life.  The remnants the world’s flora and fauna are now maintained in an orbiting spacecraft.  Orders arrive to abandon the project, destroy the biomass, and come home.  Most of the crew is delighted at the prospect of ending their tedious routine, but one botanist decides that he must preserve the ecosystem at any cost.
