In celebration of Arab American Heritage Month, we invite you to join us for a presentation on the Arabic language and calligraphy.
This session will provide an overview of the Arabic language, which is spoken natively by more than 400 million people worldwide and serves as the liturgical language for over two billion Muslims. The presentation will cover the origins of Arabic, its specific characteristics, and its structure, while highlighting examples of English words derived from Arabic. Additionally, the session will explore the art of Arabic calligraphy and showcase various scripts. To conclude, the presenter, Joe Ayoub, will write each participant's name in Arabic.
Joe Ayoub is a retired civil servant who enjoys teaching Arabic to beginners, having studied the language in college and graduate school. He currently teaches a Basic Arabic course in the Fairfax County Library system. He also is a mostly self-taught Arabic calligrapher, and has been practicing this art for more than 25 years. He shares his calligraphy at various public events in the area, and also via his Etsy Store.
