This production mixes live action with animation in a memorably strange adaptation of Jules Verne’s novel Facing the Flag, which was published in 1896 with many detailed woodcut illustrations. These illustrations form the basis for the movie’s animation, which retains the meticulous hand-drawn look even as actors perform within its confines. The resulting effect is unique in cinema and perfectly fits the steampunk-style story, which deals with a secret plot to use new technology against the armed forces of the world (a theme Verne would revisit in his novels 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and Master of the World). Filmed in Czechoslovakia with Czech dialogue, there is an English-dubbed version titled The Fabulous World of Jules Verne. Nothing is omitted from the original edition, and the subtitles in the Czech version can be difficult to read, so the dubbed version will be shown.
