Episode 3 is part of The American Revolution documentary, a six-part, 12-hour series by Ken Burns, Sarah Botstein and David Schmidt. Come watch with your neighbors and learn more about how and why the thirteen colonies went to war with the British Empire and created a new nation. Learn about individuals on all sides of the conflict (soldiers, leaders, civilians, Indigenous communities, and more) as the film examines both the ideals and complexities of America’s founding.

Episode 3: The Times That Try Men's Souls (July 1776 - January 1777) recounts the invasion fleet aimed at New York and led by brothers Admiral Richard and General William Howe which ultimately results in the evacuation of New York City by American patriots. The roles of the hired German soldiers are explored. The British also launch attacks in South Carolina. Cherokee warriors seize the opportunity to counterattack the encroachment of settlers on their territories, leading to responses by Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia militias. The episode ends with the crossing of the Delaware.
