Programa de microscopios STEM
Saturday, June 17
11:00am - 12:00pm
James M. Duncan Jr. Branch Library
Beth Patridge Meeting RoomLearn about optics and light microscopy! Ages 6-12
In this activity, participants will first learn about optics and light microscopy, and will subsequently learn to use
a basic compound light microscope. The participants will then use these microscopes to observe plant and
mammalian cells, as well as aquatic microorganisms from the Rock Creek watershed. This will serve to
educate people as to (1) the length scale in which cells operate and interact with their environment and (2)
how the morphology of different cell types reflects their function. The activity is mostly hands-on; I try to
minimize the lecture component in order to maximize engagement.
