Join Park Ranger Kevin Patti from the National Park Service to learn about Clara Barton's work with African Americans during the Civil War and with the American Red Cross.

Clara Barton lived through the Civil War, Reconstruction and beyond, in all she saw ninety years of American history. Join Ranger Kevin Patti for this illustrated program to discover the fascinating history of her experience working with and for African Americans. This talk will highlight her work with the African American soldiers of the 54th Massachusetts regiment as they stormed Fort Wagner as depicted in the movie Glory. We will focus on her long-standing advocacy for greater rights for African Americans and will explore the history of the American Red Cross relief effort Clara Barton led to help African Americans effected by the Sea Islands South Carolina hurricane of 1893.

This event is the first of our series of virtual presentations on local African American history. You may also enjoy, "F. H. M. Murray: A Forgotten pioneer for Civil Justice with Biographer Anita Hackley Lambert" on Tuesday, February 28, at 1PM: https://alexlibraryva.org/event/7961519
