Featuring Frederick Gottemoeller, one of America's most distinguished experts on bridge aesthetics and the architect of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge.
Tens of thousands of people cross the award-winning Woodrow Wilson Bridge every day. Did you know how unique the years-long process of building the bridge really was? Join Frederick Gottemoeller, the architect of the bridge, as he describes the innovations in inter-governmental decision-making, community participation, and bridge design and construction that brought this $2.5 billion-dollar project from conception to completion. And find out what comes next for this crucial local landmark.
Among Frederick Gottemoeller's more than 30 bridges are crossings of the Colorado, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Potomac and Niagara Rivers and a crossing of a World Heritage waterway, Canada’s Rideau Canal. A recent bridge, the St. Croix River Crossing between Minnesota and Wisconsin, resolved a 20 year controversy, and has won multiple design awards. Bridgescape, his book on bridge aesthetics, is a familiar reference for bridge designers. Now retired, Mr. Gottemoeller is continuing to share his ideas and knowledge through articles in bridge publications, and by presentations like this.
