Campbell Gibson, PhD. will discuss Alexandria after the Civil War, examining industry, utilities, and other intriguing facts captured in the Census.
In the years after the Civil War, Alexandria was still somewhat rural and impoverished. By the 1900s, industry was beginning a comeback and electricity and telephone service were expanding. The 1900 census captured details about households -- race, marital status and childbearing, place of birth and occupation. It also included street addresses. Cam Gibson, retired demographer with the US Bureau of the Census, uses infographics and maps to describe population characteristics by city block. His presentation includes infographics on religious denominations and local businesses and also some comparative data from 1790-2010.
Of interest to the beginning and advanced researcher.
