Episode 5 is part of The American Revolution documentary, a six-part, 12-hour series by Ken Burns, Sarah Botstein and David Schmidt. Come watch with your neighbors and learn more about how and why the thirteen colonies went to war with the British Empire and created a new nation. Learn about individuals on all sides of the conflict (soldiers, leaders, civilians, Indigenous communities, and more) as the film examines both the ideals and complexities of America’s founding.
Episode 5: The Soul of All America (December 1777 - May 1780) covers the winter conditions at Valley Forge, entry of the French into the war - causing British forces to be dispersed around its empire, and the beginning of the Southern Strategy. British General Clinton expands on Dunmore's Proclamation. As an ally of France, Spain declares war with Britain pulling more of Britain's attention to the Caribbean and to Gibraltar. The episode concludes with the loss of Charleston, South Carolina to British forces.
