Learn about the Virginia Folklife Program of Virginia Humanities, and how it documents culture in the state, through the portrait photography of Pat Jarrett.

Virginia Humanities has supported apprenticeships in cultural traditions since 2002. This program allows a mentor and apprentice to receive funding, media exposure, and event opportunities all while supporting the continuation of folkways. Apprenticeships have covered a wide range of Virginia's traditions and cultures, ranging from traditional music and dance to candy making and letterpress printing.

Come see a subset of portraits primarily documenting the Northern Virginia area at 717 Queen Street between December 15, 2025 - May 29, 2026.
