Janet Entwistle will give a virtual talk with ideas on which native plants might thrive in your garden and where you can buy them.

Have you decided to incorporate more native plants into your garden? Are you wondering which native plants might be best suited to your garden and your interests? Would you like to know how to find out about local native plant sales?

Janet will build on the July 27, 2024 in-person talk that focused on the importance of removing invasives and planting native plants to protect local biodiversity.  In this session, she will touch on the following topics:

  • What are some native plants that would provide color throughout the growing season?
  • Which might be best suited to the environmental conditions in my garden and to my interests?
  • What can I plant that is most critical to sustain butterflies, birds and bees and maintain biodiversity?
  • Where can I buy native plants? Where can I find more information?

Janet says, "all my life I have been a gardener. After I retired from the World Bank, I enrolled in a Master Gardener class where all that I had previously read and experimented with in my own garden crystallized. I came to realize the importance of planting native plants to maintain biodiverse local ecosystems and contribute to global biodiversity and a healthy planet. I am now in the process of (slowly) converting my own garden to incorporate more native plants, modernizing other outdated but familiar gardening practices, and using the knowledge I gained in the Master Gardener program, subsequent courses and readings, and my own practical experience to help others in the community do the same thing."

This event is made possible through a partnership with the Alexandria Beautification Commission.

The Alexandria Beautification Commission (ABC) was established by the City to advise City Council and citizens on all matters related to City beautification. Our goals are to:

  • Inspire beautification through an Awards program,
  • Promote environmental sustainability through collaboration and engagement with City Council, City staff, and private organizations, and
  • Educate local community on beautification & sustainability best practices.
