Local Author Leslie Pietrzyk Wins Prestigious Award

Alexandria Library congratulates Leslie Pietrzyk of Alexandria, Virginia, for her recent award, the 2015 Drue Heinz Literature Prize. Her manuscript, This Angel on My Chest, will be published by the University of Pittsburgh Press in the fall of 2015.

In a University of Pittsburgh Press press release the 54-year-old Pietrzyk said, "This Angel on My Chest is a collection of unconventionally-linked stories, each about a different young woman whose husband dies suddenly and unexpectedly. Ranging from traditional stories, to lists, a quiz, a YouTube link, and even a ‘lecture’ about creative writing, the stories grasp to put into words the ways we all cope with unspeakable loss." The collection is based on her own experience of losing her husband to a heart attack at age 37.

On Pietrzyk's website, Work-In-Progress, she shares links to three of the stories that appear in This Angel on My Chest:

From Shenandoah, flash fiction:  “Acquiescence”
From The Sun, short fiction: “Ten Things”
From r.kv.r.y, short fiction: “I Am the Widow”
