Teen Writing Contest at Alexandria Library

Between June 20 and August 1 Middle and High School Students can submit an original short story (fiction or autobiographical) between 750-1750 words for a chance to win a prize. Be creative & have fun! The Alexandria Library Teen Writing Contest is sponsored by the Friends of Beatley Central Library and the Friends of Duncan Branch Library.  




Adult Summer Reading at Alexandria Library

Why should the kids have all the fun? Join us for our second annual Adult Summer Reading program. This year, the theme is Read for the Win! Pick up a Book Bracket at any library location and let your favorite literary genres compete head to head until you’ve identified a winner. Turn in your completed Book Bracket to the Information Desk at any library location by August 29 to be entered into a drawing to win a prize.

Seed Saving with the Master Gardeners at Barrett Branch

Some 10,000 years ago, seed saving facilitated humans’ transition from hunter-gatherers to farmers. Only in the mid-1900s did this practice decline, with the development of the commercial seed industry. Now renewed interest in heirloom, unique and locally adapted vegetable and flower varieties is sparking a resurgence in seed saving.
