The whimsical combines with the grotesque in a tale set in Germany during the final days of World War II. The central character is Johannes – known as Jojo to his friends – a boy who has wholly embraced nazi propaganda and even considers Hitler his best friend, with whom he has fantasy conversations. While Jojo perceives everything his government is doing as virtuous and noble, starkly contrasting reality is displayed onscreen. The irony is at once ridiculous and horrifying.
