Dave Skylark is the star of the television show Skylark Tonight. He and his producer Aaron Rapaport manage to land an interview with a surprise fan, North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Un. Before they leave, however, the US government wants to interview them, and the CIA lures them into a plot to assassinate the dictator.
This fictional story so enraged the North Korean government that on June 25, 2014, the country’s Central News Agency condemned the film, promising a “merciless” retaliation if it was distributed. In response to this and a variety of other threats, the producers cancelled its theatrical release. However, with encouragement from politicians and celebrities such as George Clooney, Sean Penn, Michael Moore, and even President Barack Obama, Sony Pictures Entertainment decided to release the film on the originally planned date of December 25, 2014, in select theaters and video-on-demand.
