Private Joe Bauers is decidedly average for a 21st-century American soldier, which makes him a good test subject for a new top-secret hibernation program.  The plan was to keep him in suspended animation for no more than a year, but when the Army base is closed shortly after the project begins, Joe is forgotten.  He finally awakens 500 years later to find that the world that is now populated with people so stupid that he easily qualifies as the smartest person alive.  It isn’t long before these people look to him as the savior from the mess they’ve made.
