The National Gallery in London has only suffered one theft in its history. The famous portrait of the Duke of Wellington, painted by Francisco Goya, went missing in 1961, and there was no trace of who took it or where it went. Eventually the person in possession of the purloined painting sent a note offering to give it back if the government would agree to his one peculiar demand.
