As the opening screens declare, the title character has “a very lousy job,” a boring assignment in a dreary storeroom where he’s periodically browbeaten by his maniacally incompetent boss. Joe also perpetually feels ill and frequently takes time off for medical tests. Eventually one of them results in a surprising diagnosis that sends him on a bizarre odyssey and leads to encounters with a series of curious characters (including the best luggage salesman in all of cinema).
