Alexandria Library teams up with our Sister City library in Dundee, Scotland to bring you a special transatlantic book group for All Alexandria Reads!

Did you know that Dundee is Alexandria's Sister City? For 2022's All Alexandria Reads program, Alexandria Library has invited Dundee to participate in a transatlantic book group where residents of both cities can come together and discuss a book with the theme of resilience.

The White Bird Passes by Jessie Kesson is a gritty and moving portrayal of a young girl facing hardship and deprivation. Poor, crowded and dirty, but full of life and excitement, the Lane is the only home Janie MacVean has ever known. It is a place where, despite everything, Janie is happy. But when the Cruelty Man arrives, bringing with him the threat of the dreaded ‘home’ – the orphanage that is every child’s nightmare – her contented childhood may be coming to an end. Set in the back streets of Elgin, Morayshire in the 1920’s this is the story of a young girl growing up in poverty. Although a bleak subject this autobiographical novel is full of color, poetry and nature.

The White Bird Passes is coming soon the Alexandria Library's book collection. A limited number of copies will also be available at the Beatley Reference Desk on a first-come, first-serve basis for program registrants. The book is also available to purchase from Book Depository. This discussion will take place at 2:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time (local time to Alexandria) / 7:00 PM British Summer Time (local time to Dundee).
