Rick Murphy is a historian, educator, author, and filmmaker. His award‑winning work, Arrival of the First Africans in English America, received the 2020 Phyllis Wheatley Award and was adapted into a documentary. He is the Founder and President General of the Society of the First African Families of English America. His family lineage dates to the earliest colonial periods of Jamestown, Virginia, and Plymouth, Massachusetts.
He is a member of several national heredity societies, including the Sons of the American Revolution; the Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War; the Sons and Daughters of the United States Middle Passage; and the Society of the First African Families of English America. He has written numerous books and served as editor of the award‑winning volume Forgotten Patriots of the Northern Theater.
