This gentle, charming, and surreal tale is carried by its excellent child actors. An eight-year-old girl’s grandmother has recently died. The house where the old woman lived needs to be emptied, and the girl’s parents take her with them to stay there a few days while they deal with the inventory. During her free time she goes out to play, and it isn’t long before she has a strange but pleasant encounter. Set in rural France, where adults are apparently perfectly comfortable letting little children roam alone in the forest, this feature explores family relationships in a unique and remarkable way. Viewers craving action and conflict should probably look elsewhere.
