Celebrate Black History Month by joining us for a discussion of Louise Hare's first Canary Club mystery novel featuring Lena Aldridge, a mixed-race singer aboard the Queen Mary in 1930s London.
This historical novel explores Black history in England through Lena's experiences as a light-skinned Black woman passing for white, highlighting the challenges of racial prejudice and the quest for belonging, especially when she's offered a chance at Broadway but finds herself amidst a wealthy, dysfunctional family dealing with their own secrets and rising Nazism. A murder forces her to confront her hidden racial identity and navigate complex issues of class, racism, and addiction as she tries to escape her past and secure a future.
Mystery Book Club meets on the second Wednesday of each month from 3:30 to 5 PM. It is a monthly book discussion group through the Burke Branch Library.
