The story is loosely based – very loosely – on the exploits of a real 19th-century Parisian detective. A former criminal, he used his knowledge of the city’s underbelly to solve crimes and capture the perpetrators. In this adventure, he was on the trail of a murderer who may or may not have had supernatural powers. What was definitely known is that the two entered a factory for a final confrontation, and Vidocq did not come out. His biographer tries to assemble the truth from evidence that was left behind.
