Throughout the year, Friends of the Library at each of our locations hold book sales, offering thousands of quality books, CDs, DVDs and more at discounted prices. The proceeds from sales help enhance Library services, including providing support for programming, special projects, and purchasing needed materials. The items sold at book sales are donated by local residents. For the dates of upcoming book sales, please check the events calendar or contact your neighborhood library.

Donations of good quality used fiction and non-fiction books, DVDs, audiobooks, and CDs are very much appreciated by the Friends of the Library at each branch. Unfortunately, we cannot accept donations of textbooks, encyclopedias, cassette tapes, VHS tapes, or magazines. Donated items are reviewed, and a small percentage of donations are added to the Library’s circulating collection. The majority of donated materials are sold in the book sales, which raise funds to enhance Library services. Donating used books and media is a wonderful way to support the Library. To find out more about donating materials, please contact your branch.

Special Collections welcomes donations of materials related to Alexandria and Virginia history, Virginia genealogy, and the Civil War. Donations of personal papers and photograph collections relating to Alexandria’s history are welcome. Books of a historical nature may be added to the collection or sold in the book sales. Please contact Special Collections for more information.
