The collection of poetry bound in An American Sunrise tells the personal story of poet Joy Harjo set within the history of the Mvskoke people moved from their homelands to Oklahoma 200 years ago. Harjo was appointed the 23rd Poet Laureate of the United States in 2019. She is the first Native American to be named to this position.
