Woody Allen’s writing and directing skills are on full display in this feature. It begins with dialogue in his typical style that clearly establishes the messy relationships between four main characters sightseeing in Paris. One of them, an aspiring novelist, is in love with the city and adores its cultural history; to the others, it’s a nice place to eat and shop. When another couple joins them, the discord in the group increases until the writer proposes walking back to the hotel by himself while the rest enjoy their touristy activities. They agree, and when he gets lost on a side street, he unexpectedly steps into the Paris of his dreams.
