Decades before Dan Brown’s The DaVinci Code introduced a Harvard symbologist called upon to decipher a code linked to a murder, there was an Oxford Egyptologist called upon to decipher hieroglyphs linked to a murder. The plots diverge from there, and while elements of the Catholic church are essential to Brown’s novel, much of this film is set in the Muslim rather than Christian world. The assignment sends the scholar and a beautiful woman – who may or may not be his ally – on a wild adventure involving chases, fights, secret rendezvous, and double-crosses.
