Celebrating the Walter Awards from We Need Diverse Books
Books often act as both mirrors and windows. When they serve as mirrors, they provide us a chance to read about someone like us, who we can relate to. When they serve as windows, they teach us about the experiences of people whose lives are different from ours and teach us empathy. A disproportionate number of children's books are centered around white able bodied children, denying many children the opportunity to see themselves in the books they read.
In response, the annual Walter Awards from We Need Diverse Books celebrates books that reflect and honor the lives of all children. Today's stories and songs are in the inclusive spirit of the Walter Awards.
