Hylan Benton Lyon
b. February 22, 1836, Caldwell County, Ky.
d. April 25, 1907, Eddyville, Ky.

This 1856 West Point graduate was an orphan as a child. In a U.S. Army artillery unit, he fought in the Indian wars on the frontier. He resigned his federal commission and entered the Confederate Army in 1861. He was taken prisoner at Fort Donelson in February 1863 and held at Johnson's Island, Ohio. He was released in the autumn and returned to battle, seeing action in Vicksburg, Chattanooga and the Battle of Brice's Cross Roads. He was promoted to brigadier general in June 1864. After the war, he lived for a short time in Mexico and then returned to Kentucky to make a living as a farmer and a state prison commissioner.
