Potomac River Charts

1864 chart
Alexandria Library Special Collections, Map Drawer 16. "Potomac River from Indian Head to Georgetown." This chart dates to 1864, and is the fourth sheet in a series of four showing the river, created by the United States Coast Survey. This portion shows buoys and various sounding depths; the depth of the channel at Alexandria varies from 23 to 38 feet. Jones Point light is noted on this chart.

1972 chart
Alexandria Library Special Collections, Map Drawer 16. "Potomac River, Mattawoman Creek to Georgetown." This chart was produced by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. It is the 32nd edition; it uses a base map from 1926 and corrections and updates dating to 1972 appear in purple. At this time, the depth of the channel at Alexandria varies from 23 to 30 feet.
