19th Century Fertilizers

From the Alexandria Gazette and Virginia Advertiser, August 18, 1882 (p. 1).
In the left-hand column, the advertisement for Janney's Fertilizing Chemicals shows the breakdown of their own special formula and a variety of crops for suggested use. Directly below, Thomas Perry offers commercial fertilizers for sale. In the right-hand column, local merchant Philip B. Hooe also deals in fertilizers. These advertisements illustrate both the significance placed on fertilizers at the time and the large ratio of ads to news in newspapers of the era.
