Alexandria Library Needs Your Help

In 2015, the City of Alexandria agreed to a matching grant, known as the 50-50 Plan, to support the Library’s materials budget. For every tax-deductible dollar you donate to the Alexandria Library Foundation, the City of Alexandria will match it, up to $50,000.


 

 

Noon Year's Eve at Barrett Branch

Start your First Night at Barrett Branch on Thursday, December 31, starting at 10 a.m.! Performances by "Groovy Nate" and "The Great Zucchini", make a Noon Year's hat, and join in at 11:55 AM for a countdown to "Noon Year" with music & a balloon drop! All ages invited, but especially appropriate for children ages 2 and up.

Remembering William F. Smith

Alexandria Library thanks Mr. William F. Smith for his many years of dedicated service as a member of the Alexandria Library Board. A native Alexandrian, Mr. Smith co-authored "A Seaport Saga: Portrait of Old Alexandria, Virginia" with local historian T. Michael Miller.

Adult Winter Reading Program

Alexandria Library’s Adult Winter Reading Challenge is played like regular bingo. Complete activities listed on the bingo card and once you have completed five activities in a row (either across, down, or diagonal) you can turn in the card for a chance to win a prize. 

 

 

Kids Winter Reading Program

Escape the cold this winter and snuggle up with a book! Pick up a Winter Reading log at your local Alexandria Library and receive stickers for reading. Read 5 books by February 14 to get a prize.


 

 

Holiday Hours at Alexandria Library

All Alexandria Libraries will be closed Thursday and Friday, December 24 and 25, for Christmas. All libraries will be open on Thursday, December 31, from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. and will be closed on Friday, January 1.

 

 

 

STEAMivity at Beatley Central

Join Beatley Central on Tuesday, December 22, at 2 p.m. and get creative with fun hands-on activities! We will explore science, technology, engineering, art, and math with programs that allow kids to create creatively. Today we will making crazy keyboards with Makey Makeys! Ages 8+. System Upgrades at Alexandria Library

Making it one of the oldest groups of reptiles - older than snakes, lizards or crocodiles.There are more than 325 species of turtles - all unique in their own way. Come meet a few who will travel from the Buddie Ford Nature Center to meet you.

A New Hope at Duncan Branch

Rain Barrels and Stormwater at Burke Branch

Interested in saving the environment, living "green", and protecting the Chesapeake Bay? Stormwater runoff is the number one cause of pollution of our streams today. The use of rain barrels and other types of green infrastructures help to decrease the volume of storm runoff and pollutants contained in that runoff, which in turn, helps to moderate stream erosions and the resulting pollution that is impairing the Chesdapeake Bay. Join Burke Branch on Saturday, December 5, at 11 a.m. and learn how to make your own rain barrel. Program is presented by a Civil Engineer from the City's Stormwater Management Division.

 

 

 

 

Booksale and Open House at Barrett Branch

Please join Barrett Branch on Saturday December 5th from 10:00-4:00pm for our Book Sale and Open House. Hundreds of DVDs, CDs, and gently used books will be for sale. While shopping for books be sure to check out the Library's new look; new lighting, carpeting and paint give the building a fresh new image. Activities for all ages will be going on all day - including making holiday cards to give to veterans and Music from the GWMS choir.

Handmade Holiday Card-Making at Alexandria Library

Alexandria Library is collecting Handmade cards for donation to the residents of the DC Old Soldiers’ home, one of two retirement homes for veterans in the U.S. Join us at for a special card-making program at each Library location. Make one for yourself and a veteran! For all ages, registration is NOT required. Supplies and examples will be provided.
